Tips On How to Use Chalk Paint Powder

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT BRAND OF PAINT SHOULD I USE?

One of the best things about BB Frösch Chalk Paint Powder is that it can be used with ANY BRAND of flat finish latex paint. The key is flat finish. We like to use Behr because it is readily available in sample 8 oz. jars that can be tinted any color for about $3. Our go-to is Behr Premium Plus – Zero VOC available in quarts and gallons.

Valspar has a 10 oz. sample jar, but it currently is not available in flat finish.

If you are buying a quart, pick whatever brand you want, because they all have a flat-finish choice.

CAN I USE EGGSHELL, SEMI-GLOSS, OR HIGH-GLOSS PAINT?

For optimal results, it is recommended to use a FLAT FINISH paint. This will yeild the bonding, easily distress-ible, durable properties chalk paint is known for.

When added to eggshell, semi-gloss, or high-gloss paint, BB Frösch Chalk Paint Powder will yield much of the bonding properties, but the distressibility features will be compromised.

DO I NEED A FANCY BRUSH?

It is recommended to use a thick, round or oval, natural bristle, chisel-tip brush to achieve optimal results. BB Frösch brushes are designed to last years when treated with care. In fact, they get better with age!

HOW DO I AVOID BRISTLES IN MY PAINT?

New brushes should be conditioned before the first use to avoid bristles. Wet the brush, and swirl the brush on a bar of natural mild lye soap to achieve a lather. Rinse the brush, pulling the lather out until the water runs clear. Beat the bristled end of the brush against the edge of a counter or sink to loosen wayward bristles. Beat the brush several times, and don’t be gentle!

If you still have a couple loose bristles, repeat the above steps each time to wash the brush after use. You should no longer have bristles in your paint after the first couple uses.

ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR ADDING LIFE TO YOUR BRUSHES:

While painting, always keep a jar of water nearby to place the brush in should you need to step away or take a break. The water should not rise above the glued end of the bristles. Don’t ever let your brush sit to dry with paint on it.

Using a mild, natural lye soap to clean your brush after each use will not only get your brush clean, it will condition your brush, making it better with age!

WHAT IF MY PAINT IS TOO THICK?

Chalk paint will thicken over time when exposed to air. To avoid thickening, store chalk paint in a tightly sealed plastic or glass container. It is recommended not to store chalk paint in a metal container to avoid corrosion of the container contaminating your paint.

Depending on how much BB Frösch Chalk Paint Powder is added during the mixing process, the resulting chalk paint can become quite thick over time. No worries! Just gradually add water while stirring until the desired consistency is achieved.

The ability of chalk paint to thicken it the ability to achieve additional finishes such as Impasto or a Venetian Plaster-type look and feel. If you haven't tried painting with thickened chalk paint, consider it! You may discover a new finish you like!

Simply amazing results with chalk paint, and it's so easy to use.
